Root Chakra

Build Strong Foundations for Your Creativity

This blood-red chakra provides a solid foundation for your creativity. When you work with this chakra you learn to take care of your basic survival needs, leaving you free to build up your creativity from a secure and solid base. With the earth supporting you, you can put down roots and your creativity can grow and be sustained. This is the place where your creativity finds a home.

Root Chakra at-a-glance

Sanskrit name: Muladhara (root or support)
Physical location: the base of the spine, the pelvic floor, the legs, and the feet.

Element: earth.
Colour: Red
Yantra: square
Seed Mantra: Lam (pronounced Lum)
Affirmations: The earth supports me. The earth nourishes me.
Main creative concerns: developing a stable base to create from, and attending to the practical details which enable us to lead a creative, fulfilled life.
Balanced: Basic human needs are met creating a sense of emotional and physical stability. Feels connected to and supported by others. Grounded. Comfortable in your own skin. At home in the world.

Excessive: Over concern with the material side of life, to the detriment of more spiritual concerns. Fixated on security, inability to take risks, or to tolerate the chaos of the creative process.
Deficient: Neglects basic needs and is rootless. Chaotic lifestyle. Ungrounded, emotionally, and physically unstable. Airy fairy, impractical, lives in head, disassociation, out of body sensations.

Healing practices: nest building, gardening, cooking, DIY, household management (paying bills on time etc., keeping your house in order), healing family rifts, forgiveness, healing childhood traumas, making a family tree, finding out about your ancestors, connecting with like-minds, finding your tribe, being in nature, pets, self-care, reflexology, yoga, dancing, walking, cycling, environmental activism, making things with your hands, creative activities.
