Healing Trauma

The Creative Path of Healing Trauma

In the spring of 2020, I spent a lot of time walking, writing, and crying. In the early part of the year both my parents had died within a few weeks of each other. I experienced a tsunami of grief, and as a survivor of childhood abuse my grieving process was complicated and messy. In the Chakras for Creativity book I describe how walking and writing meditation helped me to deal with and emerge from the trauma. I wanted to share the methods I used to help in my recovery from trauma, because I know from experience that when we repress traumatic memories it creates a block to our creative expression, conversely when we work through the trauma our creativity is freed to grow and blossom.

In the book I share my story of how I dealt with the trauma because I think it might be helpful for those of you in similar situations. However, if you are recovering from trauma, I would recommend that it might be safer and less overwhelming for you to initially seek professional help to assist you on your healing journey, rather than trying to tackle it alone with self-help methods.

The methods that I used, and that I describe in the book are:
  • Walking Meditation
  • Writing Meditation
  • The Surrounding a Difficulty with Love Meditation
  • Mindfulness of Body and Breath
  • The Four-minute Check-in Meditation
  • Working with the Chakras
Journaling, or expressive writing, can be especially therapeutic for those with a history of trauma. Research has shown that writing can help with processing traumatic events and can reduce the severe symptoms that can accompany trauma, eventually helping the sufferer to rediscover the positive aspects of life again.
